Is it a crime to have a false return address on a US letter?

A return address is only to facilitate RETURN of the item if it can't be delivered as addressed. As another answer stated, a return address is not required at all.

There is ONE instance I am of where it would be illegal. I have been told some people place the intended delivery address where the return address would be and deliberately leave of the postage. They intend for the post office to 'return' the item for lack of postage. This is a form of mail fraud. Is it a crime to have a false return address on a US letter?
Only if it is there to conceal the location of someone who committed a crime
no, you do not even have to put a return address on a letter.
