I mean, if any fighter ever fought Rocky Balboa's fighting style he would be brain dead within two years. Also, how many club-fighters do you know with twenty losses on his record would go on to achieve superstar boxer status? The only examples I could think of is 'Fearless' Freddie Pendleton and Steve 'Lightning' Little.Did the Rocky movies create false expectations for the general public about what Boxing should be?
No one in this world can support a kind of punishment as Rocky or his opponents received.
Those movies are like a face destruction demo, in which Rocky, as a super boxer not only can receive the punches, also he can defeat bigger and taller opponents, just like the Russian guy in Rocky 4, or Mr T in Rocky 3.
Boxing is not that, but movies are movies. Fiction and fantasy will be present in the movies.
Rocky didn't created false expectations. For some people, it was the movie that make them love boxing and try it in the gyms.Did the Rocky movies create false expectations for the general public about what Boxing should be?
The Rocky story may be unlikely but it is possible, just look at Carlos Baldomir. I dont think the film romanticises boxing. For one, lets face it, Rocky's character isnt too far from being brain dead.
I think the film is impressive in the way it enforces the incredible amount of effort, determination and sacrafice it takes to make it to the top, not to mention the physical beating one has to take even to win
I think Rocky portrays more of a moral expectation of boxing, sure you cant take a beating like he did for 15 rounds. But the thing is, the beating he took is a moral of life, if you can overcome the pain and have the will power to see a better life, then you will reach your goal. Its all about the morals the film portrayed.
I loved the ROCKY movies. They are fiction. I don't think the public believes boxing is all about the underdog coming thru. That is just
';the dream';. The movie is kind of the male version of a chick flick.
It certainly did glamorize boxing more than is real but again, it is fiction. They did character Rocky as brain incompetent.
Rocky would be beaten by an average boxer in the real world of boxing.
You do not see top boxers swinging wild in front of a capable opponent if so he would be knocked out in seconds. However the average viewer might be influenced by the film.
No. It revived what boxing SHOULD be! It is not ballet, it is who is toughest!
Watch the REAL fights from the 1950's!
The lack of blocking in the film caught my eye.
